a funnier surprise.

apparently i’m in the mood for sifting through old family things these days.

i haven’t really gone through my mom’s recipe box since before she died, but decided to sift through it while mr. halloran was going through another recipe box looking for his precious pizza crust recipe.

inside i found these little gems.

judging by the handwriting these were probably written many months apart.  not only is my spelling really amusing, but it’s a sweet reminder that i started out on yogurt, fruit, and fake sugar really young.  while i don’t mix the three altogether now, i have to say they’re three of my favorite things (and often two are paired with each other still).  in fact, i was just telling mr. halloran yesterday that in my attempt to eat more organic and more vegetarian food, i’m not sure i’ll ever be able to give up fake sugar.  i’m not sure why.  i’ll probably be infertile and have all sorts of cancers for it, but i can’t stop.  at least now i put honey in my yogurt, and not poison sweeteners like equal and sotar.  i imagine sotar is even more ridiculous, as i’d bet money it was one of the fake sweeteners my grandma and my mom used to smuggle over the canadian border when i was a kid.  i digress.

my brother and i were just talking about this today – in losing our mother, we’ve lost a lot of history of ourselves.  for many things, my dad is thankfully here to fill me in on.  but who would remember that i used to love to eat fake sugar and yogurt and fruit?  nobody besides my mom, who probably did the same thing and that’s why i loved it.  as somebody who lost her mother before she really understood the importance of knowing where she came from, i really cherish having these things that help piece together the things that make me who i am (although i’d trade them all to have my mom back just one more day).

my dad keeps finding little family gems as he unpacks what he moved from our home in idaho.  today on my doorstep arrived a scrapbook of sorts that contained a lot of my mom’s old newspaper articles from the early 70s (she was a reporter in boise for several years), as well as her old college yearbook and some kitchen towels embroidered by a grandma (i hope my dad knows who).  these things are truly priceless for me.
